THE NEW KENNEDY-KING COLLEGE PROJECT

Details:

Mavis Construction participated in the construction of a new six-building community college campus for the Public Building Commission of Chicago. Located on the South Side at 63rd Street and Halsted Street, The New Kennedy King College is the largest project of its kind at $258 M. NKKC was completed six (6) months ahead of schedule.

The “at risk” Construction Management project, performed as a joint venture with McClier, required coordination, management and performance monitoring of all aspects of construction and quality control.

 Program highlights:

  • 41% in Minority Business Enterprise participation
  • 5% in Women Business Enterprise participation
  • 56% in City-Resident participation
  • 15% in Community/Residential
  • NKKC won the Midwest Construction’s Best of 2007 Award
  • Project of the Year: Higher Education/Research
  • The project is the first “campus setting” for the City Colleges of Chicago.  Forty  acres encompass 500,000 sq ft
  • Ninety-five subcontractors contributed to the project, as sub-contracts were proportioned to accommodate small business and minority business firms./li>
  • Forty-seven percent of contract dollars were awarded to minority, women-owned firms and vendors.  Project workforce reflected 60% minority representation.
  • A sub-guard program made default insurance available, avoiding subcontractor disqualification from the bidding process.
  • Environmental integration is as follows:
    • Three buildings feature green-grid roofs.
    • 90% of existing concrete recycled for foundations and roadway backfill.
    • Soil was recycled as baseball and soccer field backfill.
    • Thirty acres of landscaping doubled the municipal requirement for trees.
